LG Optimus 2XApple may have launched the smartphone boom with its iPhone but plenty of other companies have benefited from the surging popularity, with LG one of the biggest beneficiaries due to its Optimus One phone. The Optimus line (marketed as the Optimus One, Optimus T, Optimus S, and Optimus Vortex) helped put LG back on the smartphone map, quickly becoming the first LG phone to sell over 1 million units since its launch in November 2010.

Powered by Google’s Android operating system, the Optimus line gives uses flexibililty lacking with the iPhone when it comes to the types of apps available, as Optimus owners can use it for a wide range of purposes such as to play roulette online, access and run business applications, and browse social networking sites and other websites, as well as tapping into hundreds of thousands of apps at the Android Market. It uses the Android 2.2 operating system (also known as “Froyo”) but has been rumored to likely get an upgrade soon to the more powerful Gingerbread OS which has already made its debut in some smartphones and tablets.

The Optimus also can act as a mobile hotspot, powering up to five other WiFi-enabled devices, and comes with a 3.2 inch display on most models (although newer models are available with larger 4 inch displays), as well as front and rear-facing cameras and the ability to capture video. It weighs in at just over 3.8 ounces, making it one of the lighter phones the market; which can be a pro or con with some users, depending on their personal taste. Since the Optimus is available for many different carriers LG has kept the user-interface easy and simple to navigate, with a minimum of clutter.

Like online slot machines, you’ll have a lot of options and models to choose from with the Optimus line, with different carriers marketing different models. As LG’s best selling smartphone, expect the Optimus to continue to improve over time, as LG is devoting plenty of research and development dollars to ensure that the Optimus phone has all the features that consumers look for when shopping for a smartphone.
